Creating Lasting Change in the New Year

New years resolutions.

They are neither good or bad, they just are what you think they are before, during and post attaining them or your perception of them.

Every January, countless people set ambitious New Year’s resolutions—only to watch them fizzle out before spring. While the initial excitement is invigorating, life often gets in the way, and old habits resurface. So, how do you make sure your goals stay front and center long after the champagne glasses are put away?

Before getting to the "how" let's get some clarity on what's playing in your conscious and non-conscious mind.

What's your interpretation of a New Years Resolution?

One's subjective view on New Year's Resolutions will be filled with thoughts, stories, beliefs, experiences, and judgments of their predominant thoughts based on their own personal experiences or witnessing those who create, attempt, or smash them.

When we think about anything, our thoughts are influenced by many things like our past experiences, culture, values, and how we feel. This makes our view of things unique to each person.

New years resolutions.

They are neither good or bad, they just are what you think they are before, during and post attaining them or your perception of them.

When thinking about New Years Resolutions what thoughts surface for you?

(How you think about it will greatly influence whether you actually take the first step towards your goal, as well as determine the likelihood of your pursuits being sustainable in the long run. The mindset you approach your tasks with can make all the difference in whether you give up after just a couple of weeks or persevere through challenges to achieve lasting success.)

What images and stories pop into your mind instantly?

(The movies that play in your mind have a significant impact on how you feel about a certain topic. These mental images are often reflections of past experiences, including failures and negative interactions with others. The future also plays a role in these mental movies, with a mix of potential success and self-doubt or criticism from those around you. It's common for these images to go back and forth between the past and the future, shaping your emotions and perceptions. By being aware of the movies playing in your mind, you can better understand and manage your feelings towards a particular subject.)

What feelings surface (pain, agony, failure, difficult, exciting, challenging, heroic)?

(Feelings are directly connected to the thoughts that are the loudest, most triggering, the thoughts we believe, are attached to and seduced by.)

(assuming you set a resolution)

What specific challenges might you face, and how can you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally to overcome them?

(Looking ahead at any potential barriers, challenges known and unknow can help ensure your goal is attainable and realistic. If we set a target that's unrealistic we set ourselves up for an enviable failure. A smaller target with success has a greater impact on future successes.)

What do you believe about New Years Resolutions (the good, the bad, the ugly)?

(These beliefs may be yours, maybe people you know and often closest to. Sometimes quotes or sayings that are common and often heard, we hear them over and over and over and begin to believe. One said by a client recently that has me cringe every time I hear it "no pain, no gain")

What's the cost to you if you don’t follow through, what would it cost you—in terms of confidence, opportunities, money, what others think of you or future plans?

(Answers to this will reveal what you're focused on, this can be something way outside your control and could be affecting many areas of your life in a negative way.)

What have you witnessed in the people you know that set out to accomplish a big goal for the year?

(Have you seen, witnessed, and watched people fail, get frustrated, quit, and double down on more of what they don't want, change their entire life so much so they become completely different, perhaps at a cost, or accomplish their goals and more.)

What have you done in the past that worked or didn't work when setting goals for the year?

(What was your take away, what do you believe about yourself as a result, was it easy, fun, challenging, hard, difficult, painful, awful, worse than you expected, were you capable of more than I thought, perhaps rewarding.)

Have you tried something similar before, and what lessons did you learn from that experience?

(Lessons can be valuable, they also can reveal limiting beliefs and automatic negative thoughts that may not be super obvious and with awareness and acknowledgement can be reframed into something even more valuable.)

As humans, we are creatures of habit and familiarity. We often find comfort in routine and sticking to what we know. Our brain is super simplistic and will move us towards what feels good and familiar. Knowing this greater than just the logical level you'll actually take this understanding and use it towards your goals every day, not just once a year.

There comes a point in our lives where we realize that the pain of staying the same outweighs the fear of the unknown.

When we find the courage to make changes, to step outside of our comfort zones and embrace the uncertainty that comes with change. Setting a new goal, or target there's always going to be some unfamiliarity and some discomfort (not pain, pain is a signal you've gone too far).

This is where having someone like me, a life coach with you on a weekly basis to help course correct.

Sharpening Your Vision

When you set a New Year’s resolution, clarity can mean the difference between success and another "failure" for the books. I help you see the big picture, zeroing in on what matters most and keeping you in action. I understand what it takes to unlearn old habits, and learn new habits.

Providing Accountability

It’s easy to let yourself off the hook when no one’s watching. As your personal life coach I am your dedicated personal accountability partner, checking in to see if you’re following through on your promises. This supportive oversight often proves to be the “secret ingredient” that drives consistent action, even when motivation wanes.

Pinpointing Personal Roadblocks

Sometimes it's hard to recognize the very patterns holding you back, or your own blind spots. You can't fix what you can't see. I also understand that we are an accumulation of all our habits and deeply understand what it takes to break old patterns and habits and create new habits, and I make it so simple it seems too easy. I am keen to what limiting beliefs someone has by being very in tune with language. The language we use and say aloud is a glimpse into your mindset and what drives or stops you. By shining light on these blind spots, you can shift your approach and avoid tripping over the same stumbling blocks again and again.

Tailoring Strategies to Your Lifestyle

It's often believed that a coach is one that tells you what to do just like your coaches in junior, high school or maybe even college. As an accredited, credentialed coach I don't give you or my clients advice. This would be like the saying, giving you a fish a day, you'd then become dependent on me and how would that be beneficial to you? I prefer to empower my clients by teaching them how to fish so they become independent thinkers, innovators, creators, problem solvers, solution focused, and decision-makers. Through coaching, I guide my clients to discover their own strengths, values, and goals, and then help them develop the skills and mindset needed to achieve any goals they create any time of the year. This way, they are able to unlock their full potential and create lasting change in their lives.

Enhancing Confidence and Resilience

As you work toward your resolution, setbacks are inevitable—maybe a missed milestone or a moment of doubt. As your dedicated thinking partner, I help you see these hurdles as learning opportunities rather than signs of defeat. I will assist you in getting back on track and making adjustments if needed. With each new step, your confidence grows, and you build resilience to keep going when challenges arise.

Shifting Mindset and Perspective

Old thought patterns can quickly derail the best intentions. Notice how you answered the questions at the top of this blog. If you truly answer each one authentically, not how you think I would want you to answer it, there are limitations in your words. How do I know? Because you're human. Coaching is a weekly time blocked(can be 10-60 minutes) to get asked thought-provoking questions, and I reflect back your answers. This helps you open up your mind and literally your brain to train it to work for you rather than against you. The magic is in when you begin to see your goals—and yourself—in a more positive light, which often sets your heart on fire and your body into motion.

Fostering Sustainable Progress

Resolutions fueled only by short-lived enthusiasm can fade just as fast. Working closely together will keep you engaged in a gradual, consistent process—helping you track progress, celebrate small wins, and adjust tactics as life evolves. Over time, these incremental successes add up, making your resolution a lasting part of who you are, your identity, and evidence and proof that you are capable. By maintaining a strong support system (most individuals don't have someone in their life that's there for them in the way I am for my clients) and staying dedicated to your goals, you can ensure that your resolution becomes a sustainable lifestyle change rather than just a fleeting aspiration.

Offering Emotional Support

Chasing after new big goals can at times leave one feeling isolated and lost. Having access to someone who cares and provides a supportive space to express frustrations, sort through anxieties, or simply talk things out can alleviate stress and keep you in a healthier frame of mind as you tackle each challenge.

Saving Time and Energy

Wandering aimlessly or second-guessing every choice can drain your ambition and initial excitement. With me in your back pocket, you cut through the noise, sharpen your focus, and leverage proven methods tailored to you.

Celebrating Your Successes

All too often, people charge full speed toward a destination without pausing to acknowledge how far they've come. When we have someone who is eager to share your successes with and understands how hard you're working towards the goals in the background, it can be incredibly motivating and rewarding. This support system can help keep us focused and driven towards achieving our ultimate goals. Being your life coach, I will remind you to celebrate milestones—both big and small—reinforcing positive momentum.
